The last novelisation and the last serial in the Key to Time season. The second story, The Pirate Planet by Douglas Adams remains, to this day, officially unnovelised.
Despite appearances on the cover and on the spine of the novel, the title (according to the inside pages) is the abbreviated Dr Who and the Armageddon Factor, NOT Doctor Who and the Armageddon Factor.
First edition cover price - 85p
Classic chapter title: Lost on Zeos (it has to be said this novel suffers from disappointing chapter titles given it was penned by the master of classic chapter titles himself - Mr Terrance "terror" Dicks)
The ISBN 0 426 20104 3 was carried on the back cover, while on the inside it read 0 426 20103 5 for all editions.
The original Target edition was published by W. H. Allen, ISBN 0 426 20104 3 (on the back cover, 0 426 20103 5 on the inside). Reprinted 1982 and 1984 (£1.35). The ISBNs continued to disagree.
The hardback edition was also released in June 1980 as A Children's Book from W. H. Allen, London. It had a dustjacket carrying the same Donohoe artwork with a light blue spine and back cover. The ISBN was 0 491 02660 9 and it cost £3.95. This was actually the final hardback release to have a loose dustjacket. From Doctor Who and the Keys of Marinus, the covers were laminated onto the hardcover of the book.
Later editions were numbered 5 in the Doctor Who library.
It was surprising, the number of times in Target's history that they managed (either through design or good luck) to consecutively publish novelisations of consecutive TV stories, from The Zarbi and The Crusaders in 1973 (although that was more a simultaneous publication) to Silver Nemesis and The Greatest Show in the Galaxy in 1989 (with some notable near misses, including Genesis of the Daleks and Revenge of the Cybermen swapping order in 1976, and, disappointingly, right at the very end Survival managing to get published between Ghost Light and The Curse of Fenric!). However The Armageddon Factor brought to an end a never-rivalled record run of four consecutive shows/novelisations, being two-thirds of The Key to Time season on the trot! Cover Data
Mary Tamm's second and final appearance on a Target novelisation cover (as the Key to Time novels were never reprinted with new covers). Reviews
"How it is possible to condense any six-parter into 127 pages is beyond me. But TD has managed to do it."
- Gary Russell, 'Shada' (number 1), 1980UK Editions
